The Automotive Business Council, naamsa reports that new car sales increased 7,6 percent to 41,019 units in June a 7,6% increase when compared to 38,131 in June 2021. Meanwhile, the export market increased by 18 percent year on year to 33,054 units. Although it still falls short of the impressive results of February and, in particular, March sales, it showed a gradual recovery of sales since the April drop. So, what happened in June 2022?
It’s always intriguing to see what’s going on in terms of particular model sales. In June 2022, the number of new passenger vehicles sold was 29,545, up from 24,497 in June 2021 by 5,048 vehicles, or 20%. The car rental business supported the new passenger car market throughout the month, accounting for 11,2 percent of sales in June 2022.
Domestic sales of new light commercial vehicles, bakkies, and minibuses were 8,877 units, a fall of 2,329 units, or 20,8%, from the 11,206 light commercial vehicles sold in June 2021.
The medium and heavy truck segments of the industry did well during the month, with 697 and 1,900 units sold.

SA’s 10 Best-Selling Cars in June 2022
For the third month in a row, the Suzuki Swift has taken centre stage as the most popular new car in South Africa with 1,925 sales. The Ford Ranger, ahead of the Isuzu D-Max and Nissan NP200, was the best-selling bakkie. Toyota is in the lead with a market share of 25 2% year to date after selling 64,000 vehicles sales over the first half of 2022. Despite a shortage of the Fortuner, Hi-Ace, Corolla Cross, Quest, and Hilux due to the temporary closure of the Prospecton manufacturing plant, Toyota was able to sell 7 439 cars, light trucks, and SUVs last month.
