Earlier this year we published pricing for the flagship Subaru Outback wagon and now the local arm announced its local market launch. The sixth-generation Outback is available with a more powerful 2,5-litre engine Boxer engine producing 138 kW and 245 N.m. The carmaker says the power unit consists of 90 per cent new inner components.
Interestingly, it employs the same engine found in the latest Forester but generates 2 kW more and 6 N.m less. As is customary in the Subaru Outback, power is sent to all four wheels via a Lineartronic CVT transmission. X-Mode and Hill Descent Control are fitted as standard, with the former offering switchable driver programs depending on the terrain.
The Subaru Outback boasts a ground clearance of 213 mm, is 4 860 mm long, 1 855 mm wide and 1 680 mm tall. There are two trim levels to choose from: Field and Touring. The duo is differentiated by black and green colour scheme on the Field model, while the Touring derivative wears silver exterior trim.
There are nine exterior hues to choose from, including the all-new Brilliant Bronze Metallic and Autumn Green Metallic. The latest model is longer and wider than the model it replaces and debuts the company’s DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System.
A camera uses facial recognition technology to detect when the driver loses focus while driving. Inside, the 11,6-inch touchscreen with Subaru opting to retain button for adjusting volume and the climate control. Android auto and Apple CarPlay are available and four USB ports are fitted, two located in the front and two in the rear.
A Harman Kardon sound system is available as standard and features 12 speakers, including a sub-woofer in the boot. For the first time, Subaru has fitted a Handsfree Tailgate function for ease of use when loading cargo.
The Outback ships with a five-year/150 000km warranty and a three-year/75 000 maintenance plan as standard. The Subaru’s closest rival is its compatriot, the Honda CR-V 1,5T Executive AWD which retails for R705 100.
