The northern hemisphere sees supercars and super sports cars of every variety participate in the Gumball 3000 rally. In the Southern hemisphere, we’ve got the OzowDR23.
Supercars are a sight to behold and their awe-inspiring presentation only grows as more and more of them clump together. The Gumball 3000 injects supercar lust into the northern hemisphere-bound spectators, and we may just have a chance to sample that feeling alter this year. 60 of the country’s most lust-worthy supercars are scheduled to take part in the 1 300km roadshow from the 15th to the 20th of June 2023.
Initially scheduled to begin on the 27th of April, the rally has been moved in hopes of friendlier weather and less intense holiday schedules. The almost week-long event will see drivers crossing through three separate provinces namely; Gauteng, Kwa Zulu Natal and Mpumalanga. While the list isn’t confirmed just yet, the lineup will undoubtedly feature more than R100 million worth of cars mainly composed of brands such as Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche and even a Pagani or two if previous participation is anything to go by.
The starting point for this high-end rally will be the Kyalami Grand Prix circuit where, before heading out, drivers will take a few laps around the esteemed track. Afterwards, the 60-car convoy will pace towards the Drakensburg, Ballito as well as a few other scenic locations before finishing off in Nelspruit on the 20th of June. The OzowDR23 will offer more than just a six-day sprint from one part of SA to another. Events such as a gymkhana, a time trial event at Dezzi Raceway, a hillclimb competition held on the R539 near Sabie and a top-speed run at the Hoedspruit Air Force runway will serve as little breaks from the lengthy cross-country marathon.
All entrants will nominate a charity of their choosing and challenge one another to raise the most money for said charity to come to the end of the event. It is the largest supercar event in the southern hemisphere, with charity fund-raising at its core.
