The Volkswagen Golf has long been a favourite among tuners the world over. And HGP-Turbo from Germany has created many a Golf-based monster over the past few years.
But now this VW specialist has turned its attention to the Golf 7 R, ditching the hot hatch’s 2,0-litre turbo unit in favour of a bi-turbo 3,6-litre VR6 engine. Of course, HGP has performed this swap before (as has its Canada-based technical partner, HPA Motorsports), but has always used the Golf 6 R as a base, which ran on a platform built to accommodate Volkswagen’s V6.
Now, after much fettling, it has managed to successfully execute a VR6 transplant into a Golf 7 R (pilfering a transmission from an Audi RS3 in the process).
The result? Claimed peak outputs of more than 550 kW and 925 N.m, which translate into a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in a mere 3,0 seconds. According to HGP, the so-called Golf R36 can hit 200 km/h in just 8,9 seconds, before topping out at around 330 km/h.
Check out the modified Golf in the footage below. Unfortunately, the video is in German, but even if you don’t speak the language, it’s worth checking out for the engine note alone…
