Now that the winners of our annual Top 12 Best Buys awards have been revealed (grab a copy of the April 2021 issue of CAR magazine for the full article), we can take a look at the individual categories.
So, the winner in the small SUV/crossover segment? Well, the Volkswagen T-Cross claimed the title for the second year on the trot.
To define this increasingly complex pool of competitors, we factor in size (anything smaller than midsize SUV/crossovers) and price (roughly up to R400 000). Value is a key component, too, as are practicality and standard features.
All but two of the CAR editorial team plumped for a second consecutive win for the Volkswagen T-Cross, making this one of the least-contested segments in 2021’s competition. Ironic when you consider how diverse and populated the market has become.
Although still highly rated by the team, the likes of the Kia Seltos, Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport were bested by the sheer competence of the T-Cross in all disciplines. Eye-catching looks, frugal engines – now bolstered by an entry-level 70 kW 1,0 TSI and sprightly 110 kW 1,5 TSI R-Line – a spacious cabin and excellent balance between ride comfort and handling makes it a sure-fire Best Buy.
What would we change? A longer service plan wouldn’t go amiss, although that’s hardly deterring buyers. It was your top pick through our online reader’s survey yet again, too…
