Now that the winners of our annual Top 12 Best Buys awards have been revealed (grab a copy of the April 2021 issue of CAR magazine for the full article), we can take a look at the individual categories.
Fifteen times. That’s how many first-place finishes the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has scored in CAR Top 12 history. So, to award the BMW 7 Series for the first time is something of a bombshell, we’re sure you’ll agree.
Such is the disruptive force of COVID-19 that although the new Benz S-Class has launched overseas, it is yet to reach Mzansi’s shores and the previous generation is no longer available for sale. As per our judging criteria, we can only award a win to a vehicle we’ve driven, bumping the 7 Series up from bridesmaid to bride in 2021.
Thanks to innovations like its Carbon Core structure and laser light technology that services many Rolls-Royce models, it is a thoroughly deserving winner. Not to mention that – while surplus to requirements in the luxury class – it’s arguably one of the most dynamic to drive.
