Now that the winners of our annual Top 12 Best Buys awards have been revealed (grab a copy of the April 2021 issue of CAR magazine for the full article), we can take a look at the individual categories.
So, which vehicle won in the premium midsize SUV/crossover segment? Well, the Volvo XC60 retained the award, claiming the title for the third year on the trot.
As a reminder, vehicles in this category sit above the midsize SUVs in terms of price and exclusivity. They are premium cars from aspirational brands and, as such, major in sophistication, comfort, connectivity and class.
For the third year in a row, Volvo’s global bestseller has trumped its formidable German competition for the premium midsize SUV/crossover crown. We also thought it pertinent to single out the much-admired, slightly smaller, XC40 as the most praiseworthy small premium SUV/crossover.
From its handsome good looks to the minimalist cabin, excellent refinement and punchy yet efficient turbodiesel and petrol engines, the XC60 exudes Nordic calm and elegance. While the line-up has been pared down over the past 12 months, and the top-of-the-range R-Design model is lavishly equipped, the Momentum spec has all the luxury and comfort you need. The higher-powered D5 engine is your best bet.
