Toyota fans have been crying out for a Hilux that directly rivals the Ford Ranger Raptor, and it has been widely rumoured that such a model will form part of the next-generation Hilux range that’s due around mid-decade.
But not only will this full-blown GR Hilux have all the off-road kit that you’d expect from such a vehicle but it will also offer a lot more power than today’s Raptor, with the rumour mill suggesting that Toyota will offer V6 petrol and diesel powertrains, the latter taking the form of the new 3,3-litre V6 turbodiesel that’s expected to make its debut in the new Land Cruiser 300.
But to tide us over until the next-generation Hilux, Toyota will be reintroducing the GR Sport model as a global model, BestCarWeb reports. The Japanese website said that the new flagship Hilux would be launched in its home market in October, followed by a global rollout.
As with the previous GR Sport model that was briefly offered in select countries such as South Africa and Australia before the Hilux was facelifted, the new model will feature a firmer suspension set-up, although it’s unlikely that we’ll see a system as sophisticated as the Raptor’s. The 2,8-litre D-4D turbodiesel engine is expected to remain unchanged.
Buyers can expect a raft of exterior styling embellishments, including a body kit that makes extensive use of black trim, with matching 18-inch alloy wheels. BestCarWeb says that three exterior colour options will be offered, these being Dark Blue Mica, Oxide Bronze Metallic and Silver Metallic.
More details, of course, will be imparted when Toyota announces the GR Sport officially.
