Earlier in August 2018, we broke the news that Toyota South Africa had started to roll out the Hilux’s latest face (first seen on the Dakar edition models) to other derivatives in its line-up. Now the local arm of the Japanese automaker has confirmed a number of specification and range changes, too.
In addition to SRX and Raider models adopting the new Tacoma-style front, the local line-up also grows thanks to the addition new derivatives (while the previously Dakar-only Inferno Orange metallic paint is now offered across the range).
As we pointed out in that earlier story, SRX models gain the black-and-grey version of the Hilux’s new front design (as seen on Dakar models), while Raider variants gain chrome edging for this grille plus chrome trim for the front LED foglamps, exterior door handles and side-mirror caps.
SRX models now also feature automatic headlamps incorporating a follow-me-home functionality, along with a four-speaker touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth and USB functionality. These models furthermore gain a reversing camera.
The range-topping Raider models, which boast LED headlamps with daytime running lights, now benefit from a touchscreen multimedia system complete with satellite navigation and DVD functionality. Raider derivatives also inherit the latest black interior (with black headliner and metallic-black interior trim accents) from the Dakar models.
Toyota says its single-cab range has been “tweaked to align with customer demand”. A new 2,4 GD-6 Raised Body SRX model with a six-speed automatic transmission has been added to the line-up, while the 2,7 VVTi SRX falls away (as does the double-cab version of this derivative). The SR-grade has also been expanded with the addition of a rear-wheel-drive 2,4 GD-6 Raised Body manual variant.
In addition, Toyota has introduced a mid-grade 2,4 GD-6 SRX Raised Body six-speed automatic model to the xtra-cab range “in response to great market acceptance of the auto-equipped” models.
The double-cab range, meanwhile, gains a new entry-level S trim that Toyota SA describes as being “aimed at heavy-duty work”, admitting it “foregoes comfort and luxury specification for functionality and durability”. These models employ PVC interior trim, a J-deck design (latch-type tailgate with cargo hooks) and 17-inch steel wheels. They are further set apart by a black bumper and the old Hilux face.
The SR double-cab line-up has been expanded to include a 4×2 Raised Body model and also adopts the J-deck layout and black bumper/old face exterior design. Slotting into the middle of the double-cab range is a new 4×2 Raised Body variant of the 2,4 GD-6 SRX auto.
Interestingly, Toyota SA has also reintroduced three chassis-cab variants, offered in 2,0 VVTi five-speed manual AC workhorse (R250 500), 2,4 GD-6 five-speed manual AC workhorse (R284 700) and 2,4 GD-6 six-speed manual SRX 4×4 (R407 100) guises.
