The unwavering prayers of enthusiasts for Italian machinery may have been answered after reports have emerged that a V6 powered Alfa Romeo supercar will be previewed in 2023 as a sendoff before the automaker goes electric.
It is no secret that Alfa Romeo are still intertwined in their racing and performance roots. The superlative Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio are testament to this but so is their Ferrari derived twin-turbocharged V6 that powers the aforementioned high performance Quadrifoglio models.
That is the same motor that could potentially power the V6 powered Alfa Romeo Supercar which is reportedly being considered. The model, which will be previewed in 2023 would go into a low-volume production run which could be earmarked for 2025 meaning the 2,9-litre V6 which churns out 375 kW and 600 N.m could have one final sendoff before the automaker goes all electric by 2027.
This is positive news, albeit unconfirmed from the Italian automaker, particularly considering previous roadmaps had shelved a GTV, or Giulia Coupe and 8C (8 cylinder) model. Reports suggest that a “design study” for the V6 powered Alfa Romeo Supercar will be presented as early as next year, capitalising on the brands involvement in Formula 1 with collaboration from Sauber – the Swiss company that helped develop aero for the ludicrous Giulia GTAm.
If the fabled Italian automaker chooses not to leverage their Formula 1 relationship, there is also the possibility of sharing some bits with sibling brand Maserati and their MC20 supercar. Since this is all hearsay, there is no concrete information on whether the powertrain will include a hybrid system either.
Considering the brand will become purely electric by 2027 with the next generation Giulia scheduled to be electric, this would be a fitting sendoff of ICE power to a brand that has been so instrumental in the automotive world for 112 years.
