Volkswagen South Africa has confirmed it plans to launch the full-fat 190 kW version of its Amarok V6 in the third quarter of 2020.
Back in April 2018, VW announced a high-output version of its V6-powered double-cab bakkie, with the 3,0-litre TDI unit delivering a whopping 190 kW and 580 N.m.
Initial plans were for the 190 kW Amarok V6 to hit the South African market at some point in 2019, but in May of that year the Wolfsburg-based firm’s local arm confirmed the launch date had been pushed back.
Now, however, VW SA says the high-output Amarok – which is built at the firm’s Pacheco factory in Argentina – will touch down on local shores in the third quarter of 2020, slotting in at the summit of the 12-strong range (which currently tops out at R854 300 for the V6-powered Extreme variant).
As a reminder, the 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine used in current SA-spec Amarok variants churns out 165 kW and 550 N.m (or 180 kW and 580 N.m on overboost), driving all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The high-output engine, meanwhile, matches the soon-to-be-discontinued Mercedes-Benz X350d in terms of peak power (although offers 200 kW on overboost for short bursts), with its maximum torque figure besting that of Benz’s bakkie by some 30 N.m.
