Volkswagen Golf 8 R to be unveiled in 2020 (with 245 kW)?

There has been plenty of speculation regarding the yet-to-be-revealed Volkswagen Golf 8 range, as well as official confirmation its unveiling has been delayed. The latest report out of Germany, however, suggests the flagship Golf R will be uncovered late in 2020 boasting around 245 kW.

According to AutoBild, the postponement of the launch of the standard new Golf range means the R derivative will likely not make it into dealers before the end of 2020, suggesting a launch early in 2021 for the hottest version of the hatchback.

The German publication claims “not much will change” in terms of the new R-badged model’s approach to going fast, with the upcoming model set to retain its all-wheel-drive configuration and turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, plus quad tailpipes. However, peak power output is expected to climb from the current 228 kW to around 245 kW.

AutoBild furthermore reports there is no substance to rumours the Wolfsburg-based firm might revive its VR6 engine for use in the Golf R (the Golf R400 concept is not happening, either), nor suggestions it could borrow Audi’s 2,5-litre five-cylinder. A hybrid set-up, too, is apparently not on the cards.
