Volkswagen Group South Africa says it registered “a strong performance” in the country’s passenger vehicle market from January to September 2019, climbing to a market share of 23,2 percent.

The group says “key model introductions” such as the new Audi A1 Sportback, new Audi Q3, new Volkswagen T-Cross and a handful of special-edition Amarok variants helped it record a “strong performance” in the first nine months of the year, with sales of 64 658 vehicles.

From January to September 2019, the Volkswagen brand sold 52 382 units and achieved a market share of 20,2 percent in the passenger vehicle segment, a year-on-year increase of 0,6 percent.

Meanwhile, Audi’s market share rose to 17,8 percent, a year-on-year improvement of 1,2 percent. From January to September 2019, Audi sold 6 145 units to SA customers.

And Volkswagen’s commercial vehicle arm? Well, this division reported deliveries of 6 131 units in the light commercial vehicle segment from January to September 2019, representing eight percent growth. Its market share increased to 4,9 percent, up 0,4 percent year on year.

“The first nine months of this year were challenging due to the economic and political climate, but the Volkswagen passenger, Audi and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brands’ determination, innovation as well as leveraging of key vehicle introductions ensured we continue to keep our position as the passenger car leader in South Africa,” said Mike Glendinning, director for sales and marketing at VW SA.

“With three months to go until the end of 2019, we are confident that the strength of our brands, which are supported by a strong dealer network, will ensure that we retain our passenger car market leadership,” he added.
