Volvo SA to kick off electric offensive with (300 kW!) XC40 Recharge

Volvo Car South Africa has confirmed it plans to launch the fully electric XC40 Recharge by August 2021.

The order books will open in April, with the first deliveries scheduled to commence in August. Pricing, meanwhile, is excepted to be confirmed later in March.

The Swedish brand, of course, recently announced it aims to become a fully electric brand globally by as early as 2030. And as the firm’s first all-electric vehicle, the XC40 Recharge is where it all starts, with the new C40 Recharge the next in line.

Revealed in October 2019, the XC40 Recharge P8 features an electric all-wheel-drive powertrain offering a claimed range of more than 400 km and a peak power output as high as 300 kW. The obligatory zero to 100 km/h sprint is taken care of in a claimed 4,9 seconds, while top speed is limited to 180 km/h.

Volvo Car South Africa said it planned to roll out an “extensive network” of charging stations at its dealerships, saying that by the end of 2021 every local Volvo dealership would have a charging station.

Greg Maruszewski, managing director at Volvo Car SA, said he hoped the new XC40 Recharge would find favour locally.

“South Africans are already firm fans of the internal combustion engine-powered XC40. It had an 8,4 percent share of its segment in 2019; that grew to 14,7 percent in 2020. We look forward to bringing the huge benefits of electric driving – and more – to an already award-winning package,” he said.
