A fresh report out of the United Kingdom suggests that Volvo’s Polestar division is working on “at least one” standalone performance coupé, with the targeted power output approaching 450 kW.
According to Autocar, the Swedish automaker’s Polestar division – which is in the process of being transformed into a new, “separately branded” electrified high-performance company – will later this year reveal a carbon-fibre-heavy coupé making about 447 kW. The vehicle’s body will be unique to Polestar (and will not wear the Volvo badge).
The powertrain used in this bespoke model is expected to be a hybrid system, speculation all but confirmed by Volvo’s recent announcement that every new model launched from 2019 onwards will feature an electric motor.
The current T8 plug-in hybrid system (as used in the Polestar-tuned XC60 and XC90) makes 314 kW. Autocar speculates that a more powerful electric motor could be added to the mix to boost power, although points out that this could come at the expense of claimed range.
Expect to hear more news in the build up to September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
