CAR Associate Editor Sudhir Matai snapped these images in Camps Bay, Cape Town over the weekend, showing what appears to be a production-ready Golf 7 GTI. The new GTI, likely to be launched at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, was teased as a thinly disguised concept last year and is rumoured to be destined for our shores by June this year. The car photographed here is left-hand drive and was wearing German license plates.
The poor quality of the cellular phone images don’t reveal much, but there appears to be a lot of black trim on the facia and steering wheel. The exterior design seems faithful to the concept, with a far more aggressive front airdam treatment, as well as the traditional red striping. Let’s hope the wheels are “upgraded” for the real thing, however!
The Golf 7 Concept was powered by a 162 kW version of the marque’s turbocharged 2,0-litre TFSI engine that delivers 350 N.m of torque, and is likely to do the same for the production version. There is however talk of a “performance pack”, that raises the power output to 171 kW, improving the 0-100 km/h sprint time from 6,6 to 6,5 seconds (when equipped with DSG).
