Volkswagen has announced the investment of about €3-billion (that’s nearly R49-billion, in our money) in the German brand’s main plant in Wolfsburg in preparation for production of the Golf 8.
VW said that this investment would cover “tooling up for the new Golf 8” along with the implementation of a new design centre.
Earlier this month, VW announced that it planned to invest an additional €22,8-billion (around R375-billion) in its factories throughout the world from 2018 to 2022. It added that it would “pool production” of the next-generation Golf at the Wolfsburg plant.
The brand has said little about the eight-generation Golf, but rumours suggest that it will debut on a rejigged version of the ubiquitous MQB platform in 2019, likely featuring the option of a mild hybrid system.
