We all know that it’s on the way and some of us couldn’t be more excited for BMW’s upcoming M3 Touring, recently spied doing a few drifties in the snow…
BMW announced in August 2020 that the BMW M3 Touring was on the way, but that it was only at the beginning of a 2-year development cycle. The keen mathematicians amongst us, then, will have worked out that 2022 should be the year that we are all graced with the BMW that so many have been asking for for five-generations of M3.
While spy shots that have been captured of the past while have show what looks like a production ready M3 Touring, it would seem as though that is not the case with development engineers taking their time to hone the vehicle’s handling both on and off the road, it would seem. What better way to calibrate BMW’s M xDrive all-wheel drive system that on a snowy test track?
What we know so far is that the M3 Touring will make use of the same underpinnings as the G80 M3 Competition. That means 375 kW and 650 N.m from the S58 3,0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six motor, as well as an eight-speed automatic gearbox (no manual, sorry) and the aforementioned M xDrive AWD system. The M3 Touring will make its de but alongside the LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) of the current-generation 3 Series, which is BMW-speak for the ‘facelift’. A new dashboard similar to that found in the i4 will feature, too, with side-by-side digital displays spanning the length, or at least part, of the dashboard.
As far as we understand, there are no plans at this stage for BMW SA to introduce the M3 Touring to the local market.
