Volkswagen has yet to officially reveal the new Golf GTI TCR but the hardcore version of Wolfsburg’s hot hatch has now been spied undergoing testing at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
The footage, which was uploaded to YouTube by statesidesupercars, shows the undisguised, red-painted prototype being positively thrashed round the famous German circuit.
Judging by the prototype captured on video, the TCR model will gain slight design changes compared with the standard GTI. Up front, for instance, you can see new trim at the lower corners of the grille, while the roof spoiler is predictably larger.
While the GTI TCR is set to employ an uprated version of VW’s familiar EA888 turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder engine, its output has yet to be confirmed. However, various reports suggest the front-driven hot hatch will boast 221 kW. Of course, the Golf 7 GTI TCR has only just touched down in South Africa, with its four-pot tuned to deliver 213 kW.
Interestingly, an earlier report out of the United Kingdom suggested the new apex GTI would actually wear the Clubsport badge. So, TCR or Clubsport? We’ll have to wait for its official reveal to find out its name for sure.
In the meantime, watch the hot hatch in action below...
