Why the SA-spec Volkswagen T-Roc 1,4 TSI will drop the brand’s DSG…

When Volkswagen South Africa announced the composition of the local T-Roc range, we immediately noticed the 1,4 TSI variant was listed with a torque-converter automatic transmission rather than the brand’s familiar DSG. So, we asked VW SA why this was the case.

For the record, the 2,0 TSI variants in the upcoming T-Roc range (set to roll onto dealership floors in early November 2020) will employ the Wolfsburg-based firm’s seven-speed, DSG-branded dual-clutch transmission. So, why does the 1,4 TSI feature an eight-speed torque-converter gearbox instead?

Well, here’s what Volkswagen had to say.

“The 1,4 TSI engine is one of the most produced engines of the Volkswagen brand, but Volkswagen continuously evaluates the possible adoption of different engines and different gearboxes in the various regions,” VW told CARmag.co.za.

“In this process, we have customer wishes and country-specific requirements in mind. Based on these numerous factors and their examination, it is then decided in which regions are offered which engines and which gearboxes. The T-Roc 1,4 TSI with Tiptronic gearbox fits into the current competitors set in South Africa,” the company told us.

Interestingly, however, VW SA furthermore confirmed to CARmag.co.za the 1,4 TSI version of the upcoming Golf 8 was expected to stick with the DSG transmission when it launched locally in 2021.
