The BMW 8-Series E31, renowned for its timeless design, continues to inspire custom builds that push the boundaries of performance and aesthetics. This V10 powered iteration dubbed the 858 CSL may be one of the most impressive yet.

Brought to life by REYN Speed Shop and Precision Sport Industries in collaboration with automotive artist Jon Sibal, this restomod is far from a simple facelift. At its core, the 858 CSL replaces the original E31’s engine with a 5.0-litre V10, sourced from the E60 M5. Known as the S85, this engine has been further enhanced by CarBahn, the tuning house founded by BMW tuning legend Steve Dinan.
According to BMW Blog, The V10 has been stroked to 5.8 litres. The precise power output remains undisclosed though. For comparison, the stock-standard S85 engine produced 378 kW and 520 N.m of torque, significantly more than the E31’s original V12 engines, which ranged from 224 kW to 280 kW. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, ensuring a direct and engaging driving experience.
However, mechanical upgrades are just one part of the transformation of 858 CSLs. The exterior has been reimagined with a bespoke carbon fibre body kit designed by Jon Sibal. The wide fenders and redesigned bumpers integrate seamlessly with the 8 Series’ original lines, adding a modern, aggressive flair to the classic coupé.
One of the most striking modifications is the removal of the E31’s iconic pop-up headlights, replaced with vents on the bonnet to improve airflow to the upgraded V10 engine. The car also features clear taillights, new quad exhaust tips, and custom alloy wheels, all of which contribute to its distinctive appearance.

PSI also noted that the cabin in the 858 CSL has been thoroughly updated with modern BMW M components. New bucket seats, along with the steering wheel, instrument cluster, and gear knob from the E60 M5, bring a contemporary touch to the interior. The inclusion of a modern infotainment system and iDrive controller further bridges the gap between the car’s classic roots and modern functionality.
Despite its extensive modifications, the BMW 858 CSL remains a one-off project, a testament to the creativity and engineering prowess of its builders. This unique vehicle serves as both a homage to the original E31 and a showcase of what can be achieved when classic design meets cutting-edge technology.
