Yorkshire company Samson Engineering have graced the world with a creation they call the Yomper. Based on the third generation Suzuki Jimny, the Yomper is available in five different variations, ranging from a long-wheelbase drop side pickup with a 500 kg load capacity, to short-wheelbase bakkie type vehicle with 350 kg load capacity. All vehicles are also available as EV models, where electric conversions are done by an external specialist.
The name ‘Yomper’ refers to the British Marines who landed on East Falkland during the Falklands War, who then ‘Yomped’ many miles over difficult and rugged terrain with heavy Bergans on their backs, to reach their destination. They are now referred to as Yompers and in recognition of them, Samson Engineering has chosen to name their creation the Yomper. Samson Engineering are, however, able to supply you with a vehicle from their standard range or custom build a bespoke vehicle to exact specifications.
All Yompers are supplied with IVA (Individual Vehicle Assessment) compliant test certification which means that their construction and integrity is recognised by insurance companies, a testament to the quality of Samson’s craftsmanship and engineering abilities.
Better yet, each vehicle is supplied with a 12-month parts and labour warranty which covers their our workmanship and components used. Pricing varies per model but one can expect to pay in the region of £16 000 – £18 000 (R337 000 – R380 000) for a well specced, custom built Yomper.
