The new BMW M4 GTS made its local debut at the SA Festival of Motoring this week, and we managed to snaffle a couple of laps around the recently refurbished Kyalami track.
The hardcore M4 GTS serves up brutal acceleration, impressive grip levels and a spine-tingling soundtrack. But if you were hoping to purchase one of these razor-sharp, lightweight machines in South Africa, we have some bad news for you: they’re all sold (at R2 203 900 a pop).
Yes, the BMW SA managed to grab 23 of the 700 units produced, but each one has already found an owner. In fact, the example we all-too-briefly sampled at Kyalami was actually a customer vehicle.
The BMW M4 GTS employs the Munich-based brand’s familiar six-cylinder in-line turbocharged petrol engine (linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission), but adds water injection technology to give the 3,0-litre lump a hefty power boost.
This water injection system raises the engine’s output to 368 kW and increases torque to 600 N.m. The resulting sprint from zero to 100 km/h? Just 3,8 seconds (with top speed limited to 305 km/h).
