Earlier this month, BMW CEO Harald Krüger confirmed that the German automaker will soon introduce a new “model in the luxury class”. And the latest reports suggest that model may well be the 8 Series.
The Munich-based brand apparently already has its ducks in a row concerning the trademarking of various 8 Series-related monikers. But now Auto Express reports that the 8 Series – which was originally built between 1989 and 1999 – is due to return as BMW prepares to reposition its GT models.
According to the publication’s “insider” at the brand, BMW plans to reposition the 6 Series as a direct rival to the Mercedes-AMG GT and Porsche 911, which will effectively make space for the 8 Series to return, slotting in above the 7 Series.
This new flagship model would in theory do battle against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe. And it’s interesting to note that BMW has also applied to register the M8 badge, suggesting it may finally build the flagship M car that failed to make it to production back in 1990.
Of course, BMW unveiled the Gran Lusso Coupé concept pictured above back in 2013, with insiders at the time suggesting it could preview a possible BMW 8 Series return.
