Mazda has taken the wraps off its CX-9; a A midsized three-row crossover SUV that possesses a lot of the brand’s current styling signatures (KODO design philosophy) in conjunction with a lightweight Skyactiv technology engine. With the two characteristics of SUV capability and Skyactiv efficiency Mazda is urging families to take the CX-9 on adventures into the wild.
Despite having somewhat of an American appearance it’s not hard to tell that the CX-9 is a Mazda. The headlamp eyeline and reversed trapezoidal grill stand out boldly whereas the rear possesses taillamps and dual exhausts similar to those found on the CX-3 and 3. Other than these features the CX-9 has a very smooth and basic design. Mazda also attempted to make the CX-9 as athletic as possible with a wheelbase that stretches 55 mm longer than the previous model and 30 mm drop in overall height. Shorter overhangs and larger wheels are also implemented to continue this stance.
The cabin of the CX-9 is also one that fits in with the rest of the Mazda line-up. The steering wheel, climate controls, infotainment system and gear selector maintain the same layout found in the CX-9’s smaller siblings but with more usage of leather along the dashboard. Climate controls have also been inserted at the back of the front armrest for rear passengers to manage.
Driving the CX-9 will be Mazda’s 2,5-litre Skyactiv-G turbopetrol engine that produces 186 kW and 420 N.m of torque powering either a standard front-wheel drive or optional i-Activ all-wheel drive configuration while mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. There are no talks as to whether a diesel variant will be made available as yet.
The Cx-9 is expected to go on sale in the second quarter of next year in Amercian markets. With the previous generation CX-9s not being available in South Africa it’s not clear whether this new model will reach our shores either.
