New vehicle sales in South Africa are under increased pressure, with total volumes falling some 9,6% to 46 413 units in November 2016 year-on-year.
Still, it’s interesting to take a look at what’s happening in terms of individual model sales. So, we’ve examined the figures released by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), and picked out the ten best-selling passenger vehicles for the month (also, be sure to check out the 10 best-selling bakkies).
One must bear in mind that certain importers – such as Hyundai and Kia – do not submit individual model sales figures, instead only disclosing aggregate sales stats. Mercedes-Benz, too, has taken a similar stance.
The big news for November 2016 is that the Volkswagen Polo Vivo fell from top spot to third, leaving the regular Polo to assume the crown. Toyota’s combination of the Corolla, Auris and Corolla Quest (the brand reports an overall figure rather than individual model sales) thus slotted into second.
The Toyota Fortuner climbed two spots to fourth, while the Ford Fiesta fell one to fifth and the Toyota Etios one to sixth. The Ford EcoSport, meanwhile, held steady in seventh.
Here’s where things get interesting again. The Renault Kwid managed 519 units in its first month on the market, allowing it to grab eighth spot. The Datsun GO, meanwhile, returned to the table in ninth place, while the Toyota RAV4 also made a comeback, snaffling the final spot on the list. That means the Toyota Avanza (420), Renault Sandero (211) and Nissan X-Trail (267) all fall out of the top ten.
More bits and bobs
Other interesting snippets from November’s stats include the fact that the BMW 3 Series narrowly missed out on a top-ten position with 447 units sold, while the 4 Series added a further 141 units to the German automaker’s tally.
Ford enjoyed strong showings from the Everest (359), Figo (345) and Focus (331). Meanwhile, the new Honda BR-V managed 126 units, outselling all of its stablemates bar the Jazz (160).
Mazda’s best-seller was the CX-5 (279), while the Mazda3 also put in a solid effort (252). The Nissan Almera only just missed out on making the top ten, with an impressive 448 units moved in November. The Datsun GO+, meanwhile, contributed a further 102 units.
Interestingly, not a single Citroën appeared to be registered in November, while Peugeot managed just 57 units (seven more than Subaru’s total) between the 208, 308 and 2008. Renault reported a total of 1 715 units, with notable contributions from the Captur (337), Clio (278) and refreshed Duster (179).
The new Suzuki Baleno managed 37 units, while the Toyota Yaris countered with 165. Audi’s best performer was the A3 (216), with the A4 (207) hot on its heels. Volkswagen’s new Tiguan recorded 183 units, while the Golf and Jetta managed 241 and 217 respectively.
