Toyota has reportedly filed an application to trademark the “FT-4X” name, leading to speculation that the Japanese automaker is working on replacement for the FJ Cruiser.
According to Auto Guide, the “FT” in the designation stands for “Future Toyota”, mirroring a naming system the brand has used previously (the FT-86 Concept, for instance, eventually became the Toyota 86). The “4X”, of course, is thought to suggest four-wheel drive.
The application is dated October 10 so it may be a while before a new off-roading Toyota concept is revealed – if one exists at all, that is. The initial reports come from the United States, where sales of the FJ Cruiser ceased back in 2014.
Earlier this year, reports surfaced that production of the FJ Cruiser would end in August, although Toyota South Africa Motors told us that it planned to continue selling the retro-styled SUV for the foreseeable future. Indeed, the brand reported sales of 13 units in September.
