Not too long ago, there were rumours of Volkswagen dropping its most iconic badge, but now the German manufacturer has facelifted the Beetle in preparation for 2017.
So, it seems the Volkswagen Beetle won’t be killed off just yet (although said rumours suggested it would be axed only in 2018), with this facelift meaning the Beetle will live on for at least a little longer. The update comprises some light visual enhancements, new options and a special limited edition Denim model.
On the visual side of things, the Beetle receives new front and rear bumpers as well as the optional R-Line trim, new head- and taillamp clusters, two new optional colours (bottle green and white silver) and restyled 17- and 18-inch optional wheels. Interior revisions include brighter instrument panel lighting as well as new dial and facia styling for the Design Line and R-Line models. Three new upholstery options have also been added to the list.
There will furthermore be a Denim Special Beetle, following up from the 1974 Jeans Beetle, which made use of denim interior trim. This special will be painted in a stonewashed blue scheme to give it a denim-like exterior appearance. The interior won’t go crazy with denim like the original, but it will make use of the fabric for seats and storage pockets.
The engine line-up, comprising 77 kW 1,2-litre and 110 kW 1,4-litre TSI powerplants, remains unchanged. International markets, though, will still be able to spec the Beetle with the Volkswagen Golf GTI’s 162 kW turbocharged 2,0-litre petrol engine.
Availability in South Africa has yet to be confirmed.
