For my top 3 cars of the year, I’ve figured it’s best to rank them with some reference to the space they serve, and so I’ve decided to list my favourite overall car, best hatchback, and best SUV. Sorry sedans, no space for you in this list this year!
Let’s get straight into it…
Audi RS6
Audi’s RS6 is by far the best car I’ve driven this year. It’s a game changer, but also a significant upgrade from the previous generation RS6. People may look at it and simply think “family station wagon” – and while it serves that purpose superbly, its performance is absolutely incredible. True to Audi’s form, they’ve managed to package this fast and powerful beast so that it isn’t loud and in your face, but rather discreet and classy. Those who know, will know, and it tops my list for 2021.
Mercedes A45 AMG
The Mercedes A45s AMG is hands down the best hatchback of the year. While the RS6 offers the most overall (if you’re also taking into account the family factor), the A45s cleans up all the other hatchbacks in 2021. I’ve been very impressed by Mercedes Benz this year, and their A45s is a beautiful combination of clean and mean design, along with incredible performance.
GLS 63 AMG
Mercedes Benz has been so dominant for me this year, and the GLS 63 AMG ranks as my top SUV without a doubt. The AMG space has been something to behold and in this particular model, Mercedes has delivered a vehicle that is spacious, luxurious and great for the family, but sacrifices nothing in terms of performance. The sound system is stellar, and it just holds such a magnificent presence on the road.
Honourable mention
An honourable mention must go to Volvo, who have been moving to hybrid technology. The B5 hybrid engines which they are bringing out are incredible, and I had the chance to drive the XC 90 which has just made me look even more forward to the all new XC 60 – which we will only be seeing next year. Volvo is making great strides in the hybrid space, and it is important technology to be aware of and to be implementing on the roads.
