A high-ranking BMW executive has reassured fans the next 2 Series coupé will again be built on a rear-wheel-drive platform, rather than on the front-driven underpinnings employed by the new 2 Series Gran Coupé.

Speaking to Auto Express, Gernot Stuhl, product manager for the new 2 Series Gran Coupé, said the yet-to-be-revealed two-door model would continue to have drive sent to its rear axle.

“There will be a successor that will be on a rear-wheel-drive platform, so customers who want and need a new 2 Series coupé will find that in our line-up, as well as those who want a six-cylinder,” Stuhl told the publication.

Speaking separately to Autocar, Stuhl said the Munich-based firm “felt there was room for a smaller Gran Coupé model that would sit below the 3 Series in terms of size”, adding “the key focus is on driving dynamics”.

“We wanted to stress the design and sportiness with this car but, unless it offers strong driving performance, it’s not a real BMW,” he told Autocar.
