Toyota has filed an application to trademark the “GR Corolla” badge in Australia as rumours of a full-fat hot hatch gather pace.
According to CarAdvice, the Japanese firm made the application to Intellectual Property Australia in mid-March 2020, leading to speculation it plans to expand its Gazoo Racing range of performance vehicles.
Interestingly, Toyota also applied to trademark the “C-HR GR-Sport” and “C-HR GR-S” nameplates, suggesting fettled versions of the crossover are likewise on the cards.
“We have no announcements today on the introduction to Australia of ‘GR Corolla’, ‘C-HR GR-Sport’ and ‘C-HR GR-S’, except to say that we would not rule any of these out for Australia,” a Toyota spokesperson told CarAdvice.
In February 2020, a report out of the United Kingdom claimed the new Toyota GR Corolla would use the same turbocharged 1,6-litre three-cylinder petrol engine as the smaller GR Yaris but added it would hit the market only in 2023.
Late in 2019, Toyota revealed the C-HR GR-Sport in Japan, handing the crossover some added visual and mechanical spice. A report from a couple of months later suggested the C-HR would also eventually get the full-fat GR treatment, with power coming from the aforementioned G16E-GTS engine.
