Land Rover says a bakkie version of its new Defender is “technically possible” although it’s not something the firm has planned.
According to Autocar, an unnamed official at the Whitley-based firm said building a bakkie on the new Defender’s D7x unibody platform was “technically possible”.
However, the report suggested Land Rover didn’t see a market for a high-end pick-up (did someone mention the Mercedes-Benz X-Class?).
Autocar added unless the British firm could build such a vehicle in “much larger quantities and at lower prices” than it is currently able to, it would simply become a “distraction” from the new Defender SUV range.
In September 2019, a “senior source” within the Jaguar Land Rover group told an Australian publication plans for the Defender range to again include a pick-up had been abandoned.
