A fresh report out of Europe suggests Mercedes-Benz will cease production of its Mercedes-AMG SL63 at the end of May 2019.

According to MB Passion, the German brand’s Affalterbach-based performance arm has confirmed the end of the road for the SL63, although “reasons” were not provided.

Of course, Mercedes-Benz is currently working on its next-generation SL roadster range, although it’s not yet clear when these fresh models will debut. But the SL63’s premature demise likely has more to do with its ageing twin-turbo 5,5-litre V8 petrol engine and the ever-tightening emissions regulations in Europe.

Last priced at R2 808 221, the rear-wheel-drive SL63’s V8 offers 430 kW and 900 N.m, which Mercedes-AMG says is enough for a sprint from standstill to three figures in 4,1 seconds.

The SL63’s apparent death follows news in February 2019 the V12-powered Mercedes-AMG S65 had reached the end of the line…
