The head of Mercedes-AMG has confirmed the new A45’s peak power figure, with the all-paw hot hatch drawing its urge from a new turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine.

Speaking to Road & Track, Tobias Moers said the most powerful version of the upcoming A45 would deliver a staggering 420 hp, which translates to 314 kW. For the maths addicts, that’s a full 34 kW up on the outgoing model.

Of course, it’s all but confirmed the Affalterbach-based firm will offer its hottest A-Class in two states of tune: the base A45 (likely to develop around 285 kW) and the A45 S (boasting the aforementioned 314 kW). Both versions will reportedly employ a new, sophisticated version of the Stuttgart-based brand’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system (complete with a dedicated “drift mode”), along with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

These two derivatives, of course, will slot in at the very summit of the A-Class range, above the 225 kW Mercedes-AMG A35 revealed at the Paris Motor Show late in 2018.

Moers furthermore told the US publication the single-turbo, four-cylinder engine that will debut in the new A45 is a totally new design rather than simply an upgrade of the outgoing unit, promising it will offer better throttle response.

Expect the engine to be rolled out to upcoming 45-badged versions of the CLA and A-Class Sedan as well…
