New Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI and Golf 8 R power outputs leaked?

By: CAR magazine

A slide seemingly revealing the peak power outputs of all five performance variants of the global Golf 8 range – including the GTI and R – has been published on social media.

Posted to Instagram by cochespias, the low-resolution image shows each of the five derivatives from the front and rear. All petrol derivatives are, of course, set to make use of the Wolfsburg-based firm’s familiar EA888 2,0-litre TSI engine.

According to the slide, the GTI will offer 180 kW, matching the output of the Golf 7 GTI in Europe (the SA-spec version still makes 169 kW). The GTI TCR – which recent reports suggest will actually wear the Clubsport badge – is listed as boasting 221 kW, up from the 213 kW generated by the SA-bound Golf 7 GTI TCR.

Next is the diesel-powered GTD (apparently making 147 kW, up from the seventh-generation range’s 130 kW) and the plug-in hybrid GTE (which we already know will offer 180 kW).

And the Golf R? Well, according to the slide, the all-paw flagship version of the hatchback will churn out 245 kW, up from the 228 kW offered by the outgoing model.

A recent report from the UK claimed the Golf 8 GTI would be revealed at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show in March, with the Golf R set to first show its face at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. As we’ve already reported, the GTI is set to be the first Golf 8 derivative to launch in South Africa towards the end of 2020, with a 1,4 TSI variant and the flagship Golf R to follow.
