Next-gen BMW M3 and M4 engine details revealed

The upcoming next-generation versions of the BMW M3 sedan and M4 coupé will employ the Munich-based firm’s updated S58 engine, which debuted in the recently revealed X3 M and X4 M models.

According to Autocar, the twin-turbocharged 3,0-litre six-cylinder will offer “more than” 375 kW (the figure managed by the flagship X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition variants) in the new M3 and M4 (the latter offered in coupé and convertible forms), which are expected to be unveiled in 2020.

The British publication furthermore reported the straight-six engine would also power a new, four-door M4 Gran Coupé. A detuned version, meanwhile, was likely to be used in the next-generation M2.

While the engine is based on the B58 unit, BMW M division officials told Autocar “it is for all intents and purposes an all-new drivetrain with significant changes to the base engine that allow it to rev beyond 7000 r/min and deliver a much higher specific output” than the outgoing S55 mill. Expect a peak torque figure of around 600 N.m.

A report from November 2018, meanwhile, suggested the new G80-generation M3 would be offered with a choice of drivetrains as the Munich-based brand attempted to cover its bases. According to the report, the yet-to-be-revealed new M3 will be offered in both rear-wheel-drive (sDrive) and all-wheel-drive (xDrive) forms.

Citing an unnamed source, the report claimed the rear-driven M3 would be available with either a manual gearbox or an automatic transmission, while the all-paw will be exclusively automatic. The full-fat M3 Competition, meanwhile, was expected to be offered from launch.
