Next-gen Hyundai H-1 coming in 2021 … and switching to FWD – report

A fresh report out of South Korea claims a new Hyundai H-1 will finally debut in 2021, switching to a front-wheel-drive configuration.

According to Auto Post, the third-generation H-1 (which is badged as the Starex in many markets) will drop the current model’s rear-wheel-drive layout for a front-driven arrangement.

The Korean publication, which published spy photographs of the new model undergoing on-road testing, suggested power would come from a 2,2-litre turbodiesel engine (likely the unit that offers 147 kW and 440 N.m in Kia’s Sorento and Grand Sedona).

Interestingly, the report claims an unspecified turbocharged petrol engine is also on the cards. For the record, the current H-1, which has been in production for as many as 13 years (with the facelifted model arriving here in 2018), is offered in South Africa with a naturally aspirated 2,4-litre petrol engine or a 2,5-litre CRDi-badged oil-burner.

Based on its spy photographs, Auto Post suggests the new H-1 will be taller than the current model, while also pointing out the grille has grown significantly.
