Porsche Cayman GT4’s flat-six could ‘easily’ make more power…

Two key Porsche executives say the naturally aspirated 4,0-litre flat-six in the new Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder could “easily” generate more power.

In both the GT4 and the Spyder, the engine spins to 8 000 r/min and delivers 309 kW and 420 N.m to the rear axle via a six-speed manual gearbox (although PDK versions are also in the pipeline).

Speaking to whichcar.com.au, both GT boss Andreas Preuninger and boxer engine development manager Markus Baumann suggested the free-breathing six-cylinder had more to give.

“There’s meat in this engine construction. We would be stupid to give it the maximum for the first time,” said Preuninger, adding “if we weren’t strangled by [emissions] laws it could produce more quite easily”.

Baumann, meanwhile, said there was “a lot of room” for more from the engine.

“If someone wants us to enable this engine for more performance, we have those steps. Just look at what technologies the GT3 engine has … you can add technologies and then you enable the engine for more power and more revs,” Baumann explained.

Separately, Preuninger responded to a question from whichcar.com.au about the possibility of a GT4 RS arriving down the line.

“There’s always room, if you create the room. There’s lot of ideas that we have at the moment, and the good point is we have a lot more ideas than we can really carry out and realise. But I would say yes, sure. Stay tuned on this channel.”
