News about driverless cars is everywhere lately: the radio, TV news channels and newspapers, to name a few.
Today, if you Google ‘driverless cars’ you’ll notice a substantial amount of news and information…
“Driverless cars are coming to the UK” -CNBC
“Google and Fiat Chryslar announce driverless cars deal” -BBC news
“Insurance industry faces radical restructuring thanks to driverless cars” -BusinessCar UK
…and so it goes on.
Among all this you’ll also find a recent statement made by the co-founder of Canada’s Automated Vehicles Centre of Excellence, Barrie Kirk.
The Toronto Sun reported that in his statement he said, “I am predicting that once computers are doing the driving, there will be a lot more sex in cars.”
Well, the practicality of a driverless car is obvious. There have been several Youtube videos to show just how ‘self-functioning’ these cars really are. (We’d hope that this doesn’t encourage anyone to get behind the wheel drunk!)

It’s no surprise that the idea of having sex behind the wheel of a driverless car has come up and it probably won’t be long before we start hearing about people being spotted on the highway doing exactly that. (That’s not to say that it hasn’t already happened, but perhaps it’s about to become more common than joining the mile high club.)
In fact, according to a survey by DriveMode, one in six Americans say they’ve engaged in sexual activity while driving.
In an article by the Mirror UK it was said that there have already been cases where federal officers highlighted the issue to the Canadian Transport Minister, Marc Garneau. Media reports stated that Tesla drivers had been engaging in ‘questionable practices’ while on the road, from reading the newspaper to brushing their teeth.
Kirk’s concern is that having sex behind the wheel of a driverless car will inhibit a person’s ability to respond quickly when in some instances the computer alerts the ‘human driver’ to take control of the car.
The Canadian government is currently working with experts to help regulate driverless cars and these experts have already warned that people tend to overestimate the abilities of driverless cars.
