Audi has lifted the wraps off its new R8 LMS GT3 customer race car. Revealed at the Paris Motor Show, this is the fourth racing model Audi Sport has developed in the past four years, following on the second-generation R8 LMS, the RS3 LMS TCR touring car and the R8 LMS GT4.
According to the German automaker, the latest version has been “tailored” to meet customers’ requirements regarding advanced technology and less expensive operating costs.
“In developing the evolution of the [R8 LMS GT3], we’ve put even greater focus on our customers and their needs,” said Chris Reinke, head of Audi Sport customer racing.
This track-ready R8 now features the “evolution package”, which ensures greater consistency when the car is taken round a track by providing enhanced aerodynamics and cooling, and improved durability of transmission elements. Regarding operational costs, Audi has extended the service intervals of the clutch and transmission.
The R8 LMS GT3’s naturally aspirated 5,2-litre V10 is unchanged and still produces up to 430 kW and 550 N.m of torque, sending this car to 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 3,2 seconds.
According to the Ingolstadt-based brand, these modifications “represent sensible investments promising success in racing”.
How much does this mid-engined investment cost? Well, €398 000 (R6 587 460 at the current exchange rate) will buy you a R8 LMS GT3 (“evolution package” included). However, if you already own a second-generation R8 LMS, for €463 859,12 (R463 859), Audi Sport can equip your car with the evolution package. Deliveries will start in November 2018.
