Heading into the second double header of the season, Formula 1 will return to Catalan lands for the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix after the pre-season tests at the circuit at the beginning of the year. Here is what to expect.
Important times to look out for:
Practice 1 (20 May) – 14:00 – 15:00
Practice 2 (20 May) – 17:00 – 18:00
Practice 3 (21 May) – 13:00 – 14:00
Qualifying (21 May) – 16:00 – 17:00
Race (22 May) – 15:00 – 17:00
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will host the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix as Max Verstappen will hope to continue reducing the points deficit to title-rival Charles Leclerc. The excitement between the two protagonists is expected to continue as both teams have announced numerous upgrades to their respective cars. Ferrari should have the upper hand when it comes to crowd support considering it will be on Carols Sainz home turf as the Spaniard will hope to continue featuring on the podium and potentially compete for the win after some poor luck in previous races during the season.
Ferrari will also be bringing significant upgrades for the first time this season, to close the gap in performance to Red Bull. Mattia Binotto, team principal of the Italian team stated “Let’s say that in the next races it will be our turn to try to develop as much as we can by introducing upgrades.” However, Red Bull are reportedly introducing an upgrade of their own which sheds several kilograms of weight from their RB18 challenger which should bring it closer to the 798 kg minimum weight limit.
Some fresh blood will get a taste of Formula 1 machinery as Dutchman and Mercedes reserve driver Nyck de Vries will get behind the wheel of the Williams for driving duties in the first practice for the Spanish Grand Prix while Estonian and Red Bull junior driver Juri Vips will do the same when he pilots the RB18.
The sunny and dry weekend weather forecast provides an outlook that shouldn’t have mother nature intervene in dramatic fashion with a next to zero percent chance of rain with an air temperature averaging just under 30°C throughout the course of the event.
