For many South African racing fans, the heyday of the sport was the early 1990s. Not only were there huge fields of competitors, but also massive rivalry between manufacturers. Not too long ago we showcased Rudi Stadler’s Rooster Creative (Instagram) (Facebook) renditions of the modern-day BMW 325iS and Opel GSI 16 S “Superboss”, two racecars that battled it out on local tracks during the ’80s. Now there are a few more examples that have been added to the project.
1995 BMW 318i Super Touring Car (BMW 3 Series F30 Facelift)
First off, we have the BMW E36 318i Super Touring Car, driven by Deon Joubert and Shaun van der Linde in the 1995 the SA Touring Car Championship, which they dominated after finishing the series in second and fourth places, respectively. Despite being a 318i, this particular example had a limited 218 kW on tap which, with its 1 000 kg overall mass, might give a modern 3 Series touring car a run for its money if driven properly.
1995 Audi Sport Super Touring Car (Audi A4 B9)
Despite having a trusty 210 kW 2,0-litre engine, delivering power to all four wheels, at their disposal, Terry Moss and Chris Aberdein were unable to compete against the likes of Opel, BMW and Toyota after ending the season off with a total of 39 points. Traction from the all-wheel drive quattro system made these cars exceptionally quick in the rain.
1995 Toyota Camry Super Touring Car (Toyota Prius 4th Gen)
We asked Stadler to use a Prius to represent Mike White and Anthony Taylor’s competitive 1995 Toyota Camry Super Touring Car, but there’s no denying it looks the part despite not possessing the formidable 2,0-litre 3S-GE from the Celica pushing out 225 kW. The late White and Taylor were able to end the year off in third place after racking up 132 points.
