We recently reported that Porsche had strong plans to end its highly successful run in the World Endurance Championship LMP1 class. And now the news has been confirmed, with the German manufacturer announcing its intention to enter Formula E.
It is the fourth major manufacturer to do so in the past few months.
This decision is based on the company’s “Porsche Strategy 2025”, which will see it develop a combination of “pure GT vehicles and fully electric sports cars”, such as the upcoming, battery-powered Mission E road car.
“Entering Formula E and achieving success in this category are the logical outcomes of our Mission E. The growing freedom for in-house technology developments makes Formula E attractive to us,” said Michael Steiner, member of the executive board for research and development at Porsche AG.
In addition to this, Porsche says it will be increasing its involvement it the GT class with its 911 RSR in both the WEC and IMSA. Porsche is also committed to ending this year’s WEC season with its current LMP1 919 hybrid at Bahrain in November as it defends its World Championship title.
Members of the LMP1 team, including the drivers, will most likely be transferred to the new Formula E team. More details about Porsche’s Formula E entry is expected to be revealed in due time.
