The 2025 FIA Junior World Rally Championship (JWRC) kicks off in Sweden, with South Africa’s Max Smart ready to make his mark. The 22-year-old rally star, fresh from a successful 2024 campaign, returns with his sights set on the JWRC title.
The South African motorsport junior commenced his career with motocross before venturing into the four-wheeled realm and becoming a rally prodigy. In 2022, he won the FIA Rally Star African Final and since then, has transformed into one of the sport’s most promising talents.

Most importantly, Smart represents South Africa and the African continent since he is the first South African to complete a full JWRC season, the first to achieve a podium finish, and now, the first to contest a second season in the championship. “It’s an honour to represent South Africa and Africa on this stage,” said Smart. “I’ve learnt so much in my first season, and now I’m back with more experience, more confidence, and a hunger to push for the title.”
His 2024 season was impressive. Despite limited rally car experience, he achieved multiple fastest splits, a podium at Rally Italia Sardegna, and a top-10 JWRC finish. His progress has been aided by F1 and WRC coach Rob Wilson, who believes Smart has the potential to reach World Championship status. “Having worked with many WRC drivers, I see no reason why Max cannot achieve World Championship status,” commented Wilson.
As he prepares for the icy roads of Rally Sweden, Smart knows this season is pivotal. He aims for his maiden JWRC victory and to inspire young African motorsport enthusiasts. Beyond the JWRC, Smart is seeking additional sponsorships to fund parallel European events, giving him vital experience on diverse terrains. His ambition is clear: win the JWRC, progress to WRC2, and ultimately, compete at the highest level of world rallying.
