On Sunday, 20th March 2016, an exclusive organisation called Last Lion Lifestyle held a super car run from Century City to Saldanha airstrip to do a bit of drag racing.
Gathering at the starting point, some of Cape Town’s most extreme petrolheads arrived in their chosen weapons. Over 40 cars took part in this event, with the likes of the Ferrari 458, Audi R8, Porsche 911, Nissan GTR and even the infamous Lamborghini Aventador SV making an appearance.
At about 10:30 am over R80 million worth of supercars roared to life as they all set off to Saldanha Airfield in an attempt to own and conquer the drag strip.
If you were one of those innocent drivers just cruising on the N1 or N7 highway, and came across multiple lengths of exotica roaring past you, it was none other than the Last Lion Lifestyle trademark setting off to Saldanha.
It was one very special sight to see on the road, from low down sleeking supercars to more laid back luxury liners coming past, one after the other.
Just before they hit Saldanha, everyone had a quick fuel stop at the Engen garage just outside the airstrip. The petrol attendants couldn’t get over what was happening, smiling from ear to ear as they gladly assisted.
When everyone eventually arrived at the airstrip, you could smell a whiff of ‘ambition’ in the air, as all the petrolheads took their spot on the strip, getting ready to put a bit of “pedal to the metal”.
The kind of sounds being emitted from the cars as everyone set off, two-by-two, one after the other, was insane! From energetic V6s to mighty V10s, all creating one symphony of music to everyones’ ears. In the end it was down to two cars, side by side, winner takes it all.
Next to each other stood two very similar Nissan GTRs that were both CPI tuned to around 670 hp each. One was called the Fastron Pertemina GTR while the other was a “standard” CPI GTR; two almost equal contenders, ready to go head-to-head.
In the end only one can cross the line first and in this case it was the GTR… or more specifically the Fastron Pertemina GTR.
At the end of the day, after everyone’s adrenaline was just about exhausted, it all became about having a good time and promoting safer roads for South Africa. Such as participating in drag races where they are supposed to be held and not whenever the lights turn green on the way home.
