Last September we covered the nine day long Cape to Cape 2.0 challenge completed by Rainer Zeitlow, Marius Biela and Sam Roach in their Volkswagen Touareg. The route was a 19 000 km across 21 countries from Cape Town to Norway, Norkapp and was completed in just nine days, four hours and eight minutes thus claiming the world record.
Now the members of The Longest Drive are planning to take that record down with their Porsche Cayenne. They attempted the London to Cape Town route last year but where halted after crashing into a zebra 4 800 km away from their destination; it didn’t take the team long to begin preparations for their second attempt. This time they will be starting in Nordkapp on the 7th of May 2016, this Saturday, and will work their way down to Cape Agulhas.
The Longest Drive team in question consists of Jan Kalmar, Shaun Niell and Vitoldas Milius all of which attain an impressive automotive history. The team is set to travel in their zebra painted Cayenne with a standard turbodiesel 3,0-litre V6 delivering 180 kW. To turn this SUV into a wilderness trekker it has been given bull bars for protection against large animals on the road, a power winch, undercar protection plates, a roof rack with spoiler, a roll cage, a snorkel air intake, 200-litre fuel tank, a fridge and a specially reclining seat in the rear.
