Premium small cars are all the rage these days. There’s the Mini, the Fiat 500, the Audi A1 and the Citroen DS3. It now appears that Volvo is keen to get in on the action. The Swedish manufacturer is said to be considering a vehicle for this segment, but it needs someone to share the costs…Enter Geely.
When Audi launched its A1 three-door hatchback locally in 2011, it was the first genuine competitor to the Mini Cooper. The A1 three-door was, and still is, an expensive compact hatchback that you don’t buy for practicality, but rather for design and technology.
Another week another new Audi as the A1 Sportback is launched in South Africa.
Audi’s A1 Quattro may not be headed our way, but that doesn’t diminish the appeal of seeing the 188 kW, all-wheel-drive hot hatch getting decidedly sideways in the snow.
Audi has given its A1 supermini a serious shot in the arm to produce a limited-run performance model with outputs that leaves the likes of the Ford Focus ST, Renault Megane RS250 and Golf GTI in the shade.
