The national racing circus that is the Wesbank Super Series visited the “friendly city” of Port Elizabeth this weekend as the classes to did battle at Aldo Scribante for the first and only time this season. As always, the racing didn’t disappoint.
Cape Town played host to the second round of the Wesbank Super Series this past weekend at the Killarney racetrack. All the usual suspects were once again at the top of the four-wheeled field, including Johan Fourie, Des Gutzeit, Devin Robertson, Gary Formato and the Auby family. Our trip to Port Elizabeth and back in nine of the most desirable automobiles currently available in South Africa counts as one of the finest moments of my life, and has been the highlight of my fledgling career. Don’t get me wrong, it was great fun driving supercars, but I’ll never forget the Aston Martin Vantage V12 in particular – for slightly offbeat reasons.
More elegant and sporting than any equivalent Rolls-Royce, the flowing lines of the Bentley somehow always appealed despite their size, and represented a lifestyle I could only dream about. Well, sometime dreams do come true…
For one day in November, the CAR Magazine test team and a well-known local racing driver will be based at the legendary Aldo Scribante Race Circuit – just outside the friendly city of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape – putting 11 or so of the country’s most desirable performance cars through their paces for our January Performance issue.
