Audi’s A1 Quattro may not be headed our way, but that doesn’t diminish the appeal of seeing the 188 kW, all-wheel-drive hot hatch getting decidedly sideways in the snow.
Audi has given its A1 supermini a serious shot in the arm to produce a limited-run performance model with outputs that leaves the likes of the Ford Focus ST, Renault Megane RS250 and Golf GTI in the shade.
Audi has taken one of its most powerful engines and squashed it into the front of its smallest car, the A1. The engine in question is the 2,5-litre five cylinder unit already doing service in the TT RS, and due in the upcoming RS3. The engineers have put their heads together to get a full 370 kW and 660 N.m from this turbocharged unit. These are figures we would normally associate with the V10-engined version of Audi’s R8 supercar!
Audi recently announced that its quattro technology will soon be made available in the A1 – making the new sub-compact the first car in its segment to feature all-wheel-drive.
