Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton prevailed in their S2000 Sasol Ford Fiesta to take top honours in the Toyota Dealer Gauteng Rally, the fourth round of the South African Rally Championship, at the weekend. The event ended in tragedy for the Castrol Toyota Team, though, which suffered numerous penalites that saw both Toyota team entries bumped down the final results’ list.
Despite being forced out of the season-opening Total Tour Natal Rally on Saturday, former production car champion Visser du Plessis showed in the 11 special stages he completed during the two-day event in KwaZulu Natal that he is again going to be a force to be reckoned with in this year’s Sasol SA Rally Championship.
The Sasol/Konica Minolta Rally Team has a very clear objective when the Total Tour Natal Rally gets underway in Durban on Friday, 13 March: to retain their hard-won Production Car Championship and to achieve that aim, have acquired the latest Prodrive N14 rally car.
Charl Wilken and Greg Godrich claimed their 4th win of the year and Team Subaru’s 5th visit to the top step of the Production Car podium after overcoming real All Wheel Drive conditions in the Swartland region of the Western Cape this past weekend. The region was saturated after heavy rains in the days and weeks before the event, leaving vast tracts of land under water.
Visser du Plessis and Gerhard Snyman were back in their accustomed podium position in the Pirtek Subaru Impreza N14 at the end of the Swartland Rally, the penultimate round of the Sasol SA Rally Championship, which finished at the Killarney circuit near Cape Town on Saturday.
Hein Lategan and Johan van der Merwe rocketed to their maiden Production Car and class N4 win, heading up the third Subaru 1 – 2 finish of the year on the Osram Rally, round 6 of the Sasol SA Rally Championship. Subaru also claimed their first 2008 rally championship, with more to follow over the remaining two rounds.
The Sasol/Konica Minolta Subaru rally team expects a tough title fight to the 2008 Sasol SA Rally Championship season, which kicks off with the 50th running of the Hitachi Tour Natal Rally on the 7th and 8th of March, taking in the scenic and popular North and South Coast cane field stages.
The climax of one of the best and closest contested Sasol SA Rally Championships takes place in Gauteng this weekend with the season-ending Toyota Dealer Rally organised by the Pretoria Motor Club.
